Was too shy to sing in Bollywood: Priyanka Chopra

New Delhi, Oct 25 (PTI) Priyanka Chopra has gone international as a singer with her debut single but the actress says she was too shy to sing in Bollywood earlier even though offers came her way. The 30-year-old actress, whose debut track 'In My City' has become quite popular, said that her composer friends in the Hindi film industry had tried to make her sing, but she was too bashful to do it. "I used to get opportunities to sing in Bollywood but was too shy to take up any song. My friends Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Sulaiman tried to make me sing in films but I was too shy. I sang in 'Bluffmaster' (2005 film) but the song was never released," said Priyanka. Dressed in a white tee, pink jacket, light blue denims paired with white high heels, the 'Barfi!' star was in the Capital today to promote the single from her first music album which will be released later. "The single has gone triple platinum in India. The response has been overwhelming, even though it was released just a couple of weeks back. The album is a very big deal for me. I feel like a newcomer once again," she said. The single has a very international pop music feel, what with Priyanka collaborating with Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.I.Am for it. "It was a great experience working with Will. He is such a talented artist. He was the one who made me listen to this and then we decided to record it." Priyanka says despite having collaborated with international talents and label, her album is very Indian. "I am very 'desi'. I want the world to get a taste of India through my songs and the album. As I unravel the album you will see that the instruments and the beats are very Indian," she said. The actress said she trained in Western classical when she was studying in the US for four-five years, but had to prepare a lot before cutting the album. "I hired a vocal coach and she accompanied me everywhere, even during my outdoor shoots for films like 'Barfi!' and 'Teri Meri Kahaani'," said Priyanka, adding that she would be performing live soon. BSNL prepares blueprint to garner Rs 8,000 cr revenue

Loss-making state telecom firm BSNL has drawn a blueprint to garner an estimated Rs 8,000 crore revenue through monetisation of its vast real estate as well has hiving off its tower arm over the next five years. Sources said BSNL outlined its blueprint to turn profitable in a presentation to Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal.

The proposals include utilisation of its real estate, monetising of towers assets, utilisation of its factories for revenue generation, providing broadband connectivity to schools and leasing out its CDMA network. Sibal has asked BSNL to submit plans that will help the company turn profitable.

BSNL's losses have more than tripled to Rs 5,997 crore crore during 2010-11. The company had registered a net loss of Rs 1,823 crore during 2009-10. In a presentation, BSNL said its tower assets can be monetised by forming a separate company or adopting any other business model.

The company is expecting a revenue of Rs 1,600 crore over five years by leasing out spare capacity to other operators. The state-run service provider has over 70,000 towers across India. BSNL has tower sharing pacts with many private telecom operators.

In real estate, BSNL has about 4,400 hectare of total land bank. In order to monetise the real estate, it has taken up a pilot project for commercial exploitation of 10 lands. The telco is expecting a revenue of Rs 250 crore as upfront value during 2013-14 and Rs 250 crore from rental income from 2016-17 onwards from these properties.

BSNL has seven telecom factories where it plans to set up manufacturing facilities of electronic equipment in partnership with other manufacturers, which can generate a revenue of Rs 500 crore. The state-run firm has proposed to roll out wi-fi enabled hot spots across the country to provide high-speed Internet services at public places such as malls, IT parks, airports and hospitals.

This can bring in a revenue of Rs 25 crore in each zone in first year and Rs 50 crore in each zone from second year onwards. The telco also plans to connect 1.5 million schools in the country through high-speed data network. It will charge Rs 5,000 for one connection which can garner Rs 750 crore for the firm annually.

The state-run firm is exploring the possibility of imparting training to people using its expertise and infrastructure which can bring in a revenue of Rs 200 crore over a period of five years.

As part of National Policy of Skill Development, the government has envisioned a target of training 50 crore people by 2022 in different sectors. Apart from that, BSNL proposes to offer high definition video conferencing to public and further exploiting the potential of its existing CDMA network, which can rake in another Rs 250 crore.

Indian Grand Prix awaits Vijay Mallya's arrival

By Alan Baldwin

GREATER NOIDA, India (Reuters) - Vijay Mallya's nameplate gleamed on the door of his office in the Force India hospitality at the Indian Grand Prix on Thursday while a team sponsor board outside carried the words 'Fly Kingfisher'.

The flamboyant Formula One team owner and self-proclaimed 'King of Good Times' was nowhere to be seen however while his debt-ridden Kingfisher Airline is not flying anywhere just at the moment.

The tycoon's whereabouts have been the subject of considerable interest while his airline staff have protested at not being paid since March and the country's aviation regulator has suspended Kingfisher's licence.

Although Kingfisher employees agreed on Thursday to resume work after a meeting with the company chief executive (READ STORY http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/10/25/kingfisher-airlines-staff-salary-strike-idINDEE89O06B20121025), the liquor and aviation baron has not been seen in India or a Formula One paddock for weeks.

A report in the Times of India newspaper on Thursday suggested Mallya's private Airbus could be impounded if he landed in India because of dues allegedly owed to airport authorities.

Another non-bailable court warrant issued against him over bounced cheques to an airport operator was revoked this month after the dues were settled.

Force India deputy principal Bob Fernley, speaking to Reuters in Mallya's office, played down such speculation however.

"He'll be coming into India tomorrow (Friday) evening or early morning Saturday," he said. "As far as I am aware, it's just the normal business. Arrive Saturday, do qualifying and come in for the race on Sunday."

Fernley said Mallya was in Europe and had attended a meeting with Formula One teams, governing body and commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone in Paris on Monday.

PRIVATE PLAYTHING

"Obviously you have to have sympathy for the employees of Kingfisher airlines. Huge sympathy," he said when asked about reports of possible protests at the circuit. "But at the end of the day, it's a public company.

"My feeling is that no Kingfisher Airline personnel have any negative thoughts to Sahara Force India personnel or the success of Sahara Force India. They are two completely separate entities."

Force India, the first Formula One team to race under an Indian licence even if they have never had an Indian driver and are not likely to any time soon, are Mallya's private plaything although business conglomerate Sahara took a 42.5 percent stake last year.

Sahara, whose brand is prominent on the cars as title sponsor, have also been attracting negative business headlines after being ordered by the Supreme Court last October to refund about $4.6 billion to investors.

Newspapers have run large Force India advertisements ahead of Sunday's race, with similar hoardings on circuit approach roads, urging "C'mon India, raise the flag!" and declaring the team to be the only one "powered by the hopes of a billion people".

The team's drivers, Germany's Nico Hulkenberg and Britain's Paul Di Resta, have both been busy carrying out promotional duties around the New Delhi area in recent days.

Di Resta told reporters, at a crowded briefing, that he had detected no hostility towards the team as a result of Kingfisher's woes.

"I've not seen anything and I'm not aware of anything," he said. "If there's anybody they want to target then it's Vijay they should target because he's the one involved in the issues."

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who celebrates his 82nd birthday on Sunday, defended his friend.

"I've known Vijay for 30 odd years. Vijay during his life has had ups and downs," the Briton told Reuters. "And I hope if he's on a down, which I don't know whether he is, he'll be up again.

"I don't think Vijay's problem will affect the team. I hope it doesn't affect him, because he's a good guy."

Nadal pulls out of Paris and London

PARIS (Reuters) - World tennis number four Rafa Nadal has pulled out of the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour finals in London as he is still recovering from his left knee injury, the ATP said on Thursday.

The 11-times grand-slam singles champion has not played since he suffered a shock second-round loss to Czech Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June.

"It's disappointing for me to miss the last two tournaments of the season in Paris and London but it doesn't come as a surprise," the 26-year-old Spaniard was quoted as saying in a statement on the ATP website (www.atpworldtour.com).

"I will hopefully resume my tennis practice soon since I am making good progress with my recovery from injury. I am not ready to compete in time for these events so I will continue my recovery in Mallorca and work hard to be back as soon as possible."

Nadal, who has been battling knee problems for years, could also miss the Davis Cup final between his country, who are the defending champions, and Czech Republic in Prague from November 16 to 18.

With the Spaniard unable to play in the London finals, which will reunite the year's eight best players from November 5 to 12, the player ranked ninth in the world will get a berth. Serbian Janko Tipsarevic currently occupies the spot.

Nadal told Reuters in an interview last month that he would not rush back into playing before his injury had healed completely.

Webber not ready to let Vettel win

By Alan Baldwin

GREATER NOIDA, India (Reuters) - Mark Webber ruled out gifting an Indian Grand Prix victory to championship-leading Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel on Thursday.

Vettel, chasing his third Formula One title in a row, is only six points ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso with four races remaining while Australian Webber is 63 adrift of the German.

Despite the gap, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has ruled out imposing so-called 'team orders' - which were once banned but are now legal - until Webber is mathematically out of the running.

Asked by reporters whether he would be allowed to win if Vettel were right behind him at the finish, Webber did not hesitate.

"I will win. That's it," he said, deadpan.

Questioned again as to whether that meant 'win and face the consequences' or 'win with the team's backing', Webber continued:

"This weekend if I have a chance to win the grand prix I will go for it. Mathematically I have a chance (of the title), so if I'm in the lead this weekend, I'm not pulling over for anyone."

Webber has won twice so far this season and was on pole position at the South Korean Grand Prix, the round before India, with Vettel alongside.

They finished one-two, the first such domination by any team this season, but with Vettel winning after seizing the lead at the start.

Vettel has the momentum however and is the bookmakers' favourite for his fourth victory in a row. The 25-year-old also won last year's inaugural Indian Grand Prix.

Asked at a separate press briefing about possible team orders, Vettel felt it all depended on how Sunday's race developed.

"First we see to have a good start and then we'll cross that bridge when we get to it," he said.

"Obviously it wasn't an issue in the last race. I had a very good start and both of us had a very good race. But I don't like talking about these things because there are probably a million different scenarios.

"Ultimately I think it will always be different to what you think. I want to stay focused on what really matters and there's a lot to be done before that comes into play," added Vettel. (Editing by Alison Wildey)

Honda ships Brio to SA; may make Nodia facility export hub

Honda Cars India, which today shipped the first lot of 390 units of its locally-made hatchback Brio to South Africa, said it may make the Noida facility as an export hub for some of the models. It rolls out around 2,500 Brios a month.

"The expansion of our export business is the first step towards developing India as another hub for export of certain models. I think this market has a lot of potential to be an export hub for us," Honda Cars India President and Chief Executive Hironori Kanayama told reporters here.

The locally-made Brio is the first model exported to South Africa by Honda India, he said, adding the first tranche of 390 cars is a significant milestone. "We will export over 1,600 Brios to South Africa and SADC (South African Development Community) countries by next March," he said.

The SADC bloc include Tanzania, Kenya, Mauritius and the Seychelles, company's Senior Vice-President Jnaneswar Sen said. Sen said the Brio, which is rolled out from the company's Great Noida plant has 90 percent localisation. In the past 14 years, the company has exported a total of 1,028 cars, including the City, Jazz and Accord, to the Saarc region. It has now added Brio to the export portfolio.

The Brio is set to go on sale in South Africa in early December and it will be sold through Honda Motor Southern Africa dealers and through its distributors in SADC countries. Sen added that the company plans to roll out an entry level sedan, which will be built on the Brio platform, and a new CRV, premium SUV, next fiscal to expand its portfolio from here.

"We are developing entry level sedan from the Brio platform with both petrol and diesel variants. A new CRV will also be launched next fiscal," Sen said without divulging any timeline. Honda sells the popular sedan City, mid-segment Civic, premium sedan Accord, entry level hatchback Jazz and Brio, apart from the premium SUV Honda CRV in the domestic market.

McLaren can challenge Red Bull - Button

By Abhishek Takle

GREATER NOIDA (Reuters) - McLaren can deny Red Bull's Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel a fourth straight win, Jenson Button said at the Indian Grand Prix on Thursday.

"I think they (Red Bull) have upgraded their car so they're doing a very good job and when the car works well, Sebastian gets the best out of it," the 2009 world champion told reporters.

"But we don't come here thinking that it's going to be Red Bull all the way. We think that we can challenge them around here," added the Briton.

The pendulum of form has swung from one team to another in this most unpredictable of seasons but Vettel has won the last three races while Red Bull have locked out the front row in the last two.

The team currently lead the constructors standings by 77 points with four races to go and are 83 points ahead of McLaren who are third, behind Ferrari.

"Yeah, the last two races have been good for them but in a way Sebastian was lucky with his first win in Singapore with Lewis pulling out," said Button. "So, I think there's every opportunity to challenge them for race wins."

After a mid-season slump, McLaren returned to form with an upgraded car.

The Woking-based team took three consecutive victories from Hungary to Italy but reliability woes stymied their title challenge.

Button's team mate Lewis Hamilton, his title hopes effectively over, disagreed with Button's optimism however.

"I think on a dry weekend they're way ahead as they were at the last race," Hamilton, who is set to move to Mercedes next year, told reporters.

"It seems to have worked pretty well for them and who knows how many more improvements they'll come with." (Editing by Alan Baldwin)

IKEA furniture to retain Scandinavian style in India

By Anna Ringstrom

ALMHULT, Sweden (Reuters) - IKEA customers used to assembling its flat-packed furniture will, if the Swedish firm's design boss has his way, soon be able to add their own touches to products before buying.

The furniture retailer, which has grown into a global giant from its small-town roots in the heart of southern Sweden, is seeking new markets, with India on its horizon.

Even there IKEA - known for its budget furniture in huge stores - expects to keep to a Scandinavian form characterised by stripped, functional design, IKEA Design Manager Marcus Engman told Reuters.

"Having customers doing some of the job is nothing new. Historically, that has been about them assembling the products to keep prices low. But I believe in letting them take part also in the creative work," he said in an interview in Almhult where IKEA was born 69 years ago and where its creative hub still is.

"It would enable them to turn an IKEA product, which will probably always be mass produced, into their own unique thing. I think this will be important for us going forward," said Engman, sitting on a Klippan couch, which was developed by his father, also a former design chief at IKEA.

He said customers might make adjustments to a sofa, or create their own fabric patterns via the IKEA website. "We are not that far away technology-wise. What we need to find is a way to do it and still keep our low prices."

IKEA, whose name includes the initials of founder Ingvar Kamprad combined with the first letters of the farm and village where he grew up, has 338 stores in 40 countries across Europe, North America and Asia.

Kamprad, 86, a billionaire who lives in Switzerland, but who keeps up a thrifty image when he visits his homeland, founded IKEA as a mail order firm when he was only 17 and keeps a role as senior adivisor to the foundations which controls the empire.

EYE ON INDIA

He and his family still control the group through a complex corporate structure, which has been criticised for a lack of transparency.

IKEA was also recently found to have spied on employees in France and is investigating Swedish public television allegations it used political prisoners in the former east Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. In October, it apologised for air brushing women out of catalogues for Saudi Arabia.

Such brushes with controversial issues, including Kamprad's own involvement with a Swedish fascist group in the 1940s, which he later called a mistake, are not holding the company back.

It is the world's biggest furniture retailer. IKEA Group, which owns most of the stores, with others under external franchise, plans to speed up expansion after record sales in 2011/12 of 27 billion euros.

The group in May unveiled plans for 25 stores in India, already a big sourcing market its for textiles, and expects the government in the coming months to approve its application to begin trading there. Engman just returned from an inspiration trip to suppliers and design schools in India, he said.

"In the big cities there is fairly widespread awareness that we will open there. There is a curiosity around what we plan to do," Engman said of his trip, adding that IKEA has no plans make major changes to its range there.

But the company will stick to its traditional designs.

"To enter India with Indian designs would place us in a crazy position competition-wise. If we stay Scandinavian and do what we do best we will be unique in the market."

From approval, it usually takes IKEA 4-5 years to open a first store in a new market.

Engman is a firm believer in the company's "democratic design" ethos, mixing functionality, style and value.

"I actually believe that a great part in our success is the fact what we produce is mixable with other styles," he said.

"And that you get a lot for your money."

HC directive to govt on PRP Exports case

Madurai, Oct 18 (PTI) Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu Government to file a detailed affidavit regarding the measures taken by it against PRP Exports Limited, a granite firm facing charges of illegal quarrying, in view of the confusions prevailing about the sealing of the premises. Justice Vinod Kumar Sharma directed the government to file a detailed affidavit and posted a petition by the company partner Sureshkumar seeking to remove the seals. Government Counsel Nageswara Rao submitted that the entire premises had not been sealed. Only three places including two buildings had been sealed. If the company was not working, the government was not responsible. The counsel for Petitoner Rajiv Dhawan said the company's total operations had been paralysed because of the sealing. He wondered if the Executive Magistrate had powers to seal the company premises without the conducting any preliminary inquiry. Whatever reasons cited by the administration, including prevention of illegal mining, were lame excuses and not reasons to seal the company. The company had everyright to proceed with its work.If there were criminal cases, let the government proceed with them according to law, they could not paralyse the company. The Government had filed criminal cases against the PRP Exports company partners including P.R.Palanisamy for illegally quarrying granite, causing revenue loss to the government and violating explosvies act. While Palanisamy had surrendered, the other partners of the company were absconding. PTI SSN VS

Hooda not doing enough to fight crime against women: NGOs

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI) Against the backdrop of a surge in rape cases in Haryana, a group of women's organisations today accused Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of playing vote-bank politics and not doing enough to fight such crimes and violence against women in the state. They also condemned the attack on over 400 activists, including CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, by Haryana police during a rally demanding justice for the survivors of rape and sexual assault in Rohtak on October 15, and also demanded withdrawal of cases filed against them. "We were beaten up and instead of taking action against the police or taking action against the authorities who gave the order...they have filed most atrocious cases against us," Sudha Sundararaman of All India Democratic Women's Association told reporters here. "The Chief Minister was non-committal in withdrawing the cases. We are deeply outraged on the attitude of the Chief Minister and we feel that it is because of the vote-bank politics that exists in Haryana," she said. The delegation condemned violence against women in Haryana. The state has witnessed 20 cases of rape in the past one month, out of which 12 are Dalit women and from weaker sections of the society, the activist said. CPI(M) leader Karat had alleged that Hooda is not making serious efforts to curb the rising incidents of crime against women, especially in rural areas. In a memorandum presented to the Chief Minister, the delegation of activists who met Hooda demanded guidelines for police to deal with such heinous cases. The memorandum said severe action must be taken against authorities who prevent investigations from taking place, reprimand the authorities who drawback from undertaking medical examination. "The discourse around rape, especially the way in which the khap panchayat leaders are making anti-women statements about lowering the age of marriage. Some other leaders are making statement about 90 per cent of rapes being consensual. There should be strict actions against such leaders," Sundararaman said. A khap mahapanchayat in a meeting on October 14 had brushed aside the idea of a khap leader that the marriageable age of girls should be brought down to 16 years, saying the suggestion was individual in nature. The Haryana government, on its part, has written to the Punjab and Haryana High Court to set up fast track courts to deal with heinous crimes. "Haryana government must see that these guidelines are duplicated in other states so that women's movement nationally becomes stronger and violence against women must stop, and constitutional justice must become a reality," Jyotsna Chatterji of Joint Women's Programme said. VADRA-BJP 2 LAST

Sitharaman accused the Haryana government of suppressing Sitharaman accused the Haryana government of suppressing measures being taken by the bureaucracy and raised questions on the way Khemka was transferred out for probing the Vadra- DLF land deal even after the Prime Minister had talked about supporting such officers from being "oppressed". "Is this harassment or questioning this officer essentially to ensure that uncomfortable officers are moved out or is there any routine procedure that is adopted?" she questioned. The BJP spokesperson said the Prime Minister himself had stated that he would go to the extent of trying to bring amendments in the Prevention of Corruption Act to protect honest officers from being oppressed. Questioning the silence maintained by the state on the Vadra issue, she said, "Haryana government has to explain because till today in the garb of being a private citizen Robert Vadra has not uttered a word in his defence. We saw over enthusiastic Congress members and also members of this government coming out the first day like a ton of bricks on all of us who questioned it. "Having called all of us the mango people, I think we will be interested in knowing more. But on the contrary, what is happening is notwithstanding what the Prime Minister has said. Here is an official who initiated some kind of questioning. He is being told, he is being de-briefed and now the worry that BJP has is -- the Haryana government is not even explaining its position...," she said. PTI SKC RAI

No probe ordered into Wal-Mart, say officials

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The government has not ordered a probe into Wal-Mart Stores over accusations the U.S. retailer violated foreign ownership rules, officials said on Thursday in response to a media report.

Wal-Mart, which is expected to open its first Indian store after a change to ownership rules, said it had not been contacted on the subject by Indian authorities.

The Financial Times said the Commerce Ministry last week asked the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to investigate allegations that the world's largest retailer had "clandestinely and illegally" invested in supermarkets in the country. The accusations were made by a Communist Party member of parliament in a letter to the prime minister.

An Ministry of Commerce and Industry official, who declined to be identified, said the ministry had forwarded the complaint on October 10 to the RBI for examination, but said the ministry had not asked for a formal probe into the matter.

Pankaj Pachauri, a spokesman for the office of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Reuters: "Every letter that comes from an MP is routinely forwarded to the department concerned for examination. We did not order a probe. We got a letter from an MP and in due course we forwarded it to the department concerned."

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman in India, who declined to be named, said the company had not been contacted by the ministry or the central bank and was in full compliance with India's foreign direct investment laws.

"All procedures and processes have been duly followed and details filed with relevant Indian government authorities, including the Reserve Bank of India," the U.S.-based retailer said in a statement.

India recently allowed foreign retailers to own up to 51 percent in supermarkets, a decision made in the face of fierce political opposition. Previously, Wal-Mart and other foreign players were only allowed to own wholesale operations.

Wal-Mart was the most vocal advocate for the rule change and is expected to open its first retail store within 18 months.

The member of parliament from Kerala, M.P. Achuthan, whose party opposes foreign direct investment in retail, accused Wal-Mart of investing $100 million as early as early 2010 in a multibrand retail business.

In September, Achuthan had questioned Wal-Mart's role in Easyday stores, which are controlled by Bharti Enterprises, its partner in a wholesale joint venture.

The commerce minister answered that Wal-Mart Mauritius(4) Holdings Co Ltd held debentures that are convertible into a 49 percent equity stake in Cedar Support Services, the company previously known as Bharti Retail Holdings that holds Easyday.

An RBI spokeswoman said the central bank does not have investigative powers. Another RBI official declined to comment.

Achuthan told Reuters he had not been told by the government that any investigation had been ordered.

Meghalaya House in Kolkata to be ready by year-end

Shillong, Oct 18 (PTI) Following delay in completion and a subsequent increase in cost, the state cabinet today decided to take possession of the Meghalaya House in Kolkata from its builders. "The cabinet today, after due deliberations, also decided to enter into a supplementary agreement with the Asian Housing Construction Limited (AHCL) which is implementing the project to take back the project while paying back the remaining amount to AHCL," General Administration Department (GAD) minister A L Hek said. The total cost of construction was initially pegged at Rs 22 crore which has now escalated to around Rs 49 crores after changing of design of the building on several occasions. The state government has paid an amount of Rs 25 crore to the builders and the remaining amount due for payment is Rs 24 crore, Hek informed. While a government technical committee had justified the escalation in the budget, the government felt it is taking too long to complete the project. The project is ninety percent completed and the remaining work will be over within one or two month, Hek said adding that revenue worth Rs 25-30 lakh will be recovered from the tenants of the commercial block in a month. According to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the state government and the Asian Housing Construction Limited, the project which was launched in July 2005 was to have been completed in two years. Global shares dip but near recent highs, crude slips

By Rodrigo Campos

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global shares were little changed on Thursday following the best three-day run in a month, as weak earnings out of Europe offset better-than-expected Chinese economic figures.

The euro eased slightly against the dollar, but the single currency hit a five-month high against the yen in what has been a strong run as expectations grow that Spain will be bailed out before long.

Spain and Italy, two of the euro zone's more troubled economies, both held successful bond sales on Thursday.

U.S. stocks were lower after weekly jobless claims rose far more than expected. Still, the benchmark S&P 500 remains within striking distance of its 2012 closing high of 1,465.77.

"This is giving investors a reason to take profits after a nice little run, but I think we'll go back to focusing on earnings soon, and we're starting to see buyers come back into the market already," said Doug DePietro, head of trading at Evercore Partners in New York.

Wall Street got support from Verizon Communications after it said revenue was slightly above expectations while another Dow component, Travelers , posted operating earnings that were much stronger than expected.

Data showing China likely hit the bottom of a seven quarter-long economic downturn helped major averages in Asia and kept overall selling in check.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 6.09 points, or 0.04 percent, at 13,563.09. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.68 points, or 0.05 percent, at 1,460.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 10.86 points, or 0.35 percent, at 3,093.26.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was barely changed, close to its best levels in nearly a month. An MSCI index of global stocks edged up 0.1 percent after closing Wednesday at its highest in a month.

EURO DIPS BUT HOLDS RECENT GAINS

The dollar climbed to a two-month high against the yen after the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said its index of business conditions in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region rose in October to 5.7 from -1.9 in September.

The euro also weakened against the greenback as the U.S. job market data overshadowed favorable demand at a Spanish bond sale.

"Jobless claims reverted to trend at 388,000; last week's large drop was statistical," said Joseph Trevisani, chief market strategist at Worldwide Markets, in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. "Improvement in the (U.S.)labor market will continue to be fitful and slow."

The single currency fell 0.25 percent on the day to $1.3084, not too far from Wednesday's one-month peak of $1.3139. Traders reported large option expiries at $1.3100, which may influence trade, keeping the euro close to that level.

European leaders will try to bridge deep differences over plans for a banking union at their summit o n T hursday, but no substantial decisions are expected. Moves to help Spain, Greece and Cyprus may come only at a finance ministers' meeting next month, officials have told Reuters.

Spain remains the most immediate focus of attention, with the market expecting it to ask formally for international assistance very shortly, clearing the way for the European Central Bank to begin buying its bonds.

Spanish government bond yields fell after strong demand at a debt sale further fueled an improvement in sentiment toward the country, which hung on to its investment-grade credit rating earlier this week.

Ten-year Spanish bonds yields, which exceeded 7.6 percent in late July before the ECB promised to act, eased 8 basis points on the day, to 5.41 percent.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 1/32, the yield at 1.8167 percent.

CHINESE DATA HELPS

Equity bulls got relief from data showing China's third-quarter gross domestic product grew 7.4 percent from a year earlier, which was below target but in line with expectations. However, September data for key areas like retail sales and industrial output did much better than forecast, pointing toward a recovery.

Brent crude for December dropped below $112 a barrel, pressured by signs of a healthier supply outlook and the U.S. jobless claims data, which offset the Chinese GDP data.

Brent was down $1.55 at $111.67 a barrel, while November U.S. oil fell $1.02 to $91.10.

I-T officials raid GMR properties across India

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 11 Oktober 2012 | 23.06

Income Tax department officials are conducting raids across the properties of infrastructure company GMR all over the country on suspected tax evasion, sources told CNBC-TV18.

The search and seizure operations at the company's Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi offices are being carried out by the investigation wing of the IT department.

I-T department sources have told CNBC-TV18 that the raids are being conducted on suspicion of tax evasion by the company. Investigations are being done under section 132 of the I-T Act that corresponds to search and seizure.

The company has issued a statement on the matter. GMR says, "Officials from the Income Tax department came to some of our offices to check our books. We are extending all assistance to the team of officials."

Search operations are underway in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi offices of GMR. GMR's Hyderabad office is being searched by a team of eight IT officials from Delhi, reports Sumit Jha of CNBC-TV18.

Not much information is available either from the IT department or from GMR, the reason for the raids and the outcome of the raid.

However, GMR said that they are confident that they will come clean in these searches.

Recently, CAG in a very scathing criticism of GMR-led consortium DIAL which operates the Delhi Airport said that the PPP model on which DIAL was running the Delhi Airport was flawed and had major discrepancies.

On Wednesday a PIL was also admitted by the High Court based on the same observations of anomalies by the CAG and the first date of hearing of that PIL is on October 31.

Shares of GMR Infrastructure  closed up 3.44% at Rs 24.05 apiece.

IOC won't take any action yet against Armstrong

By Karolos Grohmann

BERLIN (Reuters) - Lance Armstrong will keep his 2000 Sydney Games bronze medal for now despite being accused of cheating his way to the top in cycling, the International Olympic Committee saying it is still too early to take action.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said the American, who won the Tour de France seven times, was part of the "most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen".

USADA has banned Armstrong, 41, for life and stripped him of his Tour de France titles and on Wednesday it published the findings of an investigation into the cyclist and his U.S. Postal Service team.

Armstrong's lawyer called the probe a "hatchet job" and "witch hunt". The rider has denied cheating and has never failed a doping test but he did not fight the USADA charges.

"The IOC has taken note of USADA's report and is currently reviewing it together with all related documentation," an IOC official told Reuters on Thursday. "It would be premature at this stage to say whether the IOC is contemplating any action.

"Should we come across any evidence that would justify opening a disciplinary procedure we would of course act accordingly."

Armstrong won the bronze in the time trial in Sydney. The IOC has a statute of limitation of eight years to change results and strip athletes of their medals.

The USADA report, however, links Armstrong to doping before the Sydney Games and could offer a different legal basis for the IOC to act.

The comprehensive report contained the testimony of 11 of Armstrong's former team mates that, according to USADA, provided undeniable proof the American was at the centre of a sophisticated doping programme.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which also received the report, praised USADA's actions.

"We would like to commend USADA for having the courage and the resolve to keep focused in working on this difficult case for the sake of clean athletes and the integrity of sport," said WADA president John Fahey in a statement.

"WADA welcomes the fully reasoned decision from the US Anti-Doping Agency with respect to the Lance Armstrong case and confirms that we will now, as with all cases, carefully consider its contents and the voluminous accompanying evidence.

"The process followed by USADA has at all times been appropriate and careful and in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code," Fahey added.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has 21 days to decide whether to appeal against USADA's rulings.

"Thereafter WADA has a further 21 days to determine whether we will exercise our independent right of appeal," said Fahey.

Rooney to captain England as Lampard ruled out

LONDON (Reuters) - Wayne Rooney will be given the opportunity to captain England for the first time in a competitive international in their World Cup qualifier against San Marino after Frank Lampard was ruled out of the match through injury.

England face the European minnows at Wembley on Friday, four days before a sterner test against Poland in Warsaw.

Rooney, who has 76 caps for England and missed the opening two Group H matches after suffering a nasty cut playing for Manchester United, captained his country in a friendly against Brazil three years ago.

"I enjoy working with Wayne, we had a good Euros," manager Roy Hodgson told reporters on Thursday.

"I was disappointed of course when he got that terrible gash and I was even worried it would keep him out not only of the September games but also of the October games.

"Luckily he has made a quick recovery and will certainly captain the team in the first one."

Vice-captain Lampard had been in line to lead out the team on Friday in the absence of usual captain Steven Gerrard who is suspended for the match.

"Frank had a scan earlier in the week. He tried to train apart from the team on Wednesday morning and he still felt a problem with his calf. There has been a slight tear.

"It's not a major problem but the best thing is for him to go back to his club and receive treatment on a daily basis. We will reassess the situation on Sunday."

Lampard's Chelsea team mate Ryan Bertrand has also pulled out of the squad for Friday's match through illness.

The left-sided player, who will also return to be re-assessed on Sunday, used an expletive as he reacted angrily on social network site Twitter to accusations he had withdrawn from the squad due to a sore throat.

He said: "Just to clarify. It's not a 'sore throat' I'm ill. Swollen glands in my neck. And constant headache for 3 days now and freezing cold. Do you think a "sorethroat" could stop me being a part of a match for my club or country? #yourf******nuts this is what every boy dreams of."

After Chelsea defender Ashley Cole was forced to apologise to FA chairman David Bernstein for a Twitter insult he aimed at the governing body last week, Hodgson used the Bertrand incident to caution his players against stepping out of line.

"It's a reminder," Hodgson said. "His sentiments were laudable. He was a little irritated but his choice of words was wrong but it reminds us how unbelievably careful the players have to be."

Syria's Islamist rebels join forces against Assad

By Mariam Karouny

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Powerful Syrian Islamist brigades, frustrated at the growing divisions among rebels, have joined forces in what they say is a "liberation front" to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

Mistrust and miscommunication have been a feature of the rebel campaign against Assad. Differences over leadership, tactics and sources of funding have widened the rifts between largely autonomous brigades scattered across Syria.

After more than a month of secret meetings, leaders of Islamist brigades - including the Farooq Brigade that operates mainly in Homs province and the heavyweight Sukour al-Sham brigade of Idlib - formed the "Front to Liberate Syria".

The agreement is not the first which seeks to bring together disparate fighting groups and its Islamist emphasis has already alienated some other fighters.

The growing role of the Islamist fighters and their battlefield prowess has also caused concern among Western powers as they weigh up how best to support the opposition forces arrayed against Assad.

The new front does not include some groups which Western officials consider the most radical such as the Nusra Front, an affiliate of al Qaeda which has claimed responsibility for a series of devastating bombs in Damascus and Aleppo.

Ahrar al-Sham, a Salafist group which includes a large contingent of foreign fighters, withdrew, objecting to the killing of a Salafist leader killed by a rival rebel force.

But rebel sources said talks were continuing to bring Ahrar al-Sham back, and leader of the new front, Ahmad al-Sheikh, said it was continuing to attract members.

"We have more than 40,000 fighters now and the numbers are growing because more brigades are expressing interest in joining," said Sheikh, known to his men as Abu Eissa.

Accurate figures for the total rebel numbers are hard to establish but such a force could represent around half of Assad's armed opponents.

Originally the group was called the Islamic Front to Liberate Syria. Brigade leaders voted to drop the word 'Islamic' but Islam remains a central element, Sheikh told Reuters.

"We are proud of our Islamism and we are Islamists. But we do not want to show it in a slogan because we might not live up to the responsibility of Islam," said Sheikh, who is also the head of the Sukour al-Sham Brigades. "But we want a state with Islamic reference and we are calling for it."

Brigades in Damascus, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, Idlib and Homs provinces have joined the front and logistical offices have been opened across Syria to facilitate coordination, Sheikh said.

CHECKPOINT ATTACKS

Since its formation, the front's fighters have been focused on attacking checkpoints as part of their attempt to push Assad's forces out of towns.

On Tuesday fighters from the Sukour al-Sham (Hawks of Syria) seized the town of Maarat al Nuaman in Idlib province from government forces.

The revolt against Assad began as peaceful protests calling for democracy and greater rights, but gradually turned to an armed struggle against his military machine, pitting the Sunni majority against the president and his minority Alawite sect.

A lack of vision over how to topple Assad and divisions among opposition leaders encouraged more Syrians to take up arms. But splits soon surfaced among fighters, mirroring the disintegration among political opposition leaders.

Many rebel leaders were angered that the head of the Free Syrian Army, the umbrella rebel group, was based in Turkey, saying it stripped him of any legitimacy among fighters who were dying inside the country.

The belated move by Riad al-Asaad back into Syria last month has done little to change their stance.

"We are tired of paper tigers outside the country who have no link to the battlefield," said Sheikh, whose 16-year-old eldest son was killed in fighting in Idlib six months ago.

"We have gathered to unite the military work and we also have other agendas. We want to build the state of justice and give rights to its people after 40 years of oppression."

Abu Eissa insists that all the Front's fighters were Syrian and none of the foreign fighters who have come to Syria will be allowed to join.

"We do not want anyone from outside, so that the revolution is not exploited and is not serving the agendas of others," he said.

Their weapons are seized from attacks on Syrian army posts and some arms dealers inside and outside Syria, he said. Some European countries had promised they would soon recognise the front, he added.

TENSION ON THE GROUND

But the move which is supposed to unite the rebels has also widened the rifts. Some in the FSA denounced the front and said that the emphasis on Islamic identity would worry minorities in the religiously mixed country.

Some fighters also said the group receives funding from Gulf states which promote the same Islamist ideology - a reference to Saudi Arabia and Qatar - and also has better access to weapons coming through Turkey.

They accused them of denying some of those arms to rebels from smaller groups fighting alongside them.

"We are fighting and getting killed but some do not even bother helping us. They just watch us as if we are not on the same front," said a fighter in a brigade composed of less than 500 insurgents.

Sheikh said his front would maintain "brotherly relations" with all groups but fell short of offering support.

"Whoever wants to work with us is a brother and a son of the front and whoever wants to work under other wings in the interest of the revolution is also a brother for us. But the others who are in the camps (in Turkey), they do not have any acceptance among us." (Reporting by Mariam Karouny; Editing by Dominic Evans and Angus MacSwan)

Uruguay striker Suarez says he must improve attitude

MONTEVIDEO (Reuters) - Uruguay's Luis Suarez, in the eye of a diving storm in England, has recognised that he needs to curb his volatile reactions to refereeing decisions to avoid more suspensions.

The Liverpool striker, set to play in Friday's World Cup qualifier against Argentina in Mendoza, was banned for last month's 4-0 defeat by Colombia and then booked for dissent on his return in the 1-1 draw with Ecuador.

Suarez is one of seven Uruguayans carrying a yellow card who will miss Tuesday's match in Bolivia if they are booked against Argentina.

"As the years go by you realise what you have to correct," Suarez told the Uruguayan daily El Pais on Thursday. "I'm 25 and there are things I must improve like my attitude on the pitch.

"But that's how I've played since I was a kid. I try to correct it but there are times when my anxiety makes me play that way.

"Everyone knows I gesture a lot, talk and protest and those are things I must improve on."

In England, where Suarez was suspended for eight matches last season for racially insulting Manchester United's French defender Patrice Evra, there have been demands this week for the striker to be punished for alleged diving.

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis complained on Sunday that, during his team's 0-0 draw with Liverpool, the Uruguayan had dived attempting to win a penalty.

Suarez said earlier in the week he felt reassured by the backing of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

"That the manager supports me and is with me is important," he explained.

Pope warns lapsed Catholics of "spiritual desertification"

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict urged lapsed and lukewarm Roman Catholics on Thursday to rediscover their Church and stop the advance of "spiritual desertification".

The pope made his comments in the homily of a Mass before tens of thousands in St Peter's Square on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, a far-reaching event in the Church's 2,000-year history.

"Recent decades have seen the advance of a spiritual destertification," he said, opening a worldwide "Year of Faith". "We see it all around us ... the void has spread."

The mass was attended by hundreds of Roman Catholic bishops as well as representatives of other Christian churches, such as Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. The bishops are in Rome for a synod, or conference, at the Vatican aimed at building a strategy to bring lapsed Catholics back to the faith.

The Vatican has termed this effort the "new evangelisation" of the developed world and it has asked Catholics, particularly those who have left the Church, to look deep into their hearts and either rekindle their relationship with God or deepen it.

Local Catholic parishes around the world will hold events such as Bible studies, retreats, special Masses, community service events and discussion groups about the sacraments.

The pope urged Catholics to use these opportunities to rediscover "the thirst for God, the ultimate meaning of life".

The Church is suffering desertions from its practising flock in former strongholds in Europe, North America and Latin America due to sex abuse scandals, increasing secularism, rival faiths and open dissent against Church teachings on homosexuality and its ban on a female priesthood.

"NEW EVANGELISATION"

The synod's working document speaks of the need to address the divergence between Catholic values and the reality of modern life in Europe and North America, and an "educational emergency" of children no longer being taught the faith.

Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council 50 years ago to bring the Church up to date with the modern world.

During the Council, which ended in 1965, nearly 3,000 bishops from more than 100 countries wrote 16 documents on various aspects of Church life and mission and urged more "collegiality," or sharing of responsibility, between the pope and bishops.

Among its innovations was the introduction of the Mass in local languages after centuries of it being said in Latin.

The Council also encouraged dialogue with, and respect for, other religions and repudiated the concept of collective Jewish guilt for Jesus' death, revolutionising Catholic-Jewish relations after 2,000 years of mistrust.

But 50 years on, the Council is divisive. Liberals in the Church say Benedict, who attended the Council as a young priest, has turned back the clock on some Council reforms and moved to centralise power in the Vatican again.

Conservatives praise him for correcting what they regard as errors in applying its ideas. For example, conservatives assert that the Council's push for dialogue with other religions went too far and weakened the traditional teaching that Catholicism is the one true faith. The 70-year-old Satya Prakash Agarwal, in his letter to Akhilesh, also alleged that the city police did not lodge his complaint as it was hand in gloves with the politician. Drugmakers tackle health crisis of child sex abuse

ZURICH (Reuters) - Leading drugmakers will help set up psychological centres for victims of child sex abuse in an effort to counter the long-term health problems suffered by victims.

Roche , Merck and GlaxoSmithKline are to j oin forces with Harvard Medical School, the Mayo Clinic and others to improve medical education and accelerate the early identification of victims.

Sexual exploitation when a child can saddle a person with life-long illnesses and a range of mental problems.

"For the first time in history, the healthcare industry is coming together to attack the scourge of child sexual abuse and exploitation as a public health issue," Franz Humer, chairman of Roche and ICMEC, said on Thursday.

The 25-member committee, which is funded via donations and by governments, will go beyond only providing drugs and plans to develop an "action plan", including undertaking epidemiological research and identifying gaps in the treatment of victims.

At least one in five girls and one in 10 boys are victims of sexual abuse before they reach the age of 18, but only one in three cases is reported, according to the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC).

Studies have shown that victims of sexual abuse often suffer mental and physical health problems, including depression, anxiety, eating and sleeping disorders, and a higher risk of death from heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

While governments have made progress in enacting laws to protect children, the problem is still growing, prompting the need for a coordinated global effort and an industry-wide approach, ICMEC president Ernie Allen said.

"This is a problem of hidden victims," Allen told a news conference. "The key challenge is to awaken the world."

IMF calls for action as euro zone crisis festers

The IMF, on Thursday, prodded the world's advanced countries for swifter action on Europe's debt crisis which, the body says, is beginning to affect emerging markets such as China and Brazil, while the United States and Japan show scant progress in handling their budget-deficits.

Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said political wrangling added to economic uncertainty, slowing growth in both advanced and emerging economies. The IMF cut its global growth forecast this week for the second time since April.

"We expect action and we expect courageous and cooperative action on the part of our members," Lagarde said in a news briefing ahead of the IMF's twice-yearly meetings in Tokyo.

The IMF has expressed frustration with Europe's piecemeal response to its debt crisis and warned that a recent respite in borrowing costs for debt-laden countries such as Spain may prove short-lived unless euro zone leaders come up with a comprehensive and credible plan.

Standard & Poor's cut its rating on Spain on Wednesday to a level just above junk territory, and Moody's may soon follow.

The IMF itself is struggling to muster the sort of decisive action that Lagarde wants to see from world leaders. Its 188 member-countries meet on Friday and Saturday, and will fall short of a goal to implement voting reforms that would give large emerging economies greater say and elevate China to the No. 3 spot in IMF power.

Christine Lagarde stressed the urgent need to pull advanced economies out of the current slowdown as the effect of the growth slowdown was hurting emerging markets.

"The biggest change compared with what we said earlier is that the crisis is not only affecting advanced economies, but emerging markets particularly in Asia. And the World Economic Outlook data, which was released a couple of days ago, certainly indicates the effect of the slowdown being felt in countries like China, Russia and Briazil."

A territorial dispute between Japan and China added another element of disharmony. China's top central bank and finance ministry officials backed out of the meetings and sent deputies to Tokyo instead.
