'Words were perhaps too strong, but sentiment was honest'

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday defended his explosive outburst against the ordinance to protect convicted politicians but admitted that the words that he used to lamblast the Cabinet decision may have too strong.

While defending the Cabinet's decision to withdraw ordinance on convicted legislators, Rahul said, "I had to voice my opinion to which I have a right."

"My mother(Sonia Gandhi) told me the words you used were perhaps too strong, maybe in the hindsight it is true but the sentiment was honest," he said a day after the Cabinet took back its September 24 decision to bring in an ordinance reversing Supreme Court's verdict disqualifying convicted leaders.

Rahul had on Septemeber 27 called the ordinance a 'complete nonsense', should be torn up and thrown away. His 'nonsense' remark came at a Congress press where party spokesperson Ajay Maken was defending the ordinance

"I called up Ajay Maken and he said that he is defending the ordinance, I told him wait I will come and defend the ordinance myself," Rahul said.

"A large part of the Congress party agrees with my opinion. But the stand that I took on ordinance is actually detrimental and harmful from alliance point of view" he added.

After Rahul's remark on ordinance the Cabinet met on Wednesday and rolled back its decision on it. He, however, faced the criticism of the Congress's allies on the way the events unfolded.
